Cubans for De-…Trump?
Cuban Americans are split between supporting the upcoming presidential candidates. The majority of Cuban Americans in Florida are conservative republicans. As mentioned by the pew research “Nationwide, 58% of Cuban registered voters say they affiliate with or lean toward the Republican Party, while 38% identify with the Democratic Party or lean Democratic, according to a Pew Research Center survey”
Cubans and Cuban-Americans have shown their support for republican members in governor races electing DeSantis and presidential ones electing for Trump. Tensions are clear between Cubans who support Desantis vs those who support trump.
As seen by various tweets many have expressed their concerts over DeSantis past actions of disloyalty towrads Trump. Leading many to favor Trump in a sense of loyalty to him.
This was especially seen in Hialeah Florida which has a 95.8% hispanic/latino population. The majority of this community being Cuban American.

This past week trump held a rally in Hialeah Florida. According to the messenger “Trump beats DeSantis 74-26% in a head-to-head matchup, according to the poll exclusively shared with The Messenger. In the crowded primary, the poll shows, Trump’s support slightly dips to 69% and DeSantis tumbles to 19%, with all other candidates mired in single digits.”

Excellent post! I'm curious, do you think the way DeSantis has used immigrants (such as sending them to Martha's Vineyard and to California) has contributed to this divide? Or do you think the Cuban population felt they had a bigger voice and better outcomes under Trump? One thing is certain, the Cuban population WILL ensure they are heard in South Florida and I think this could have a significant impact on how Florida votes in 2024...the question is, who is better able to answer them?
ReplyDeleteKellie raises a great question! Many Cubans in Florida are asylees and refugees. Therefore, they may be concerned over DeSantis harsh laws on immigration. However, just recently Trump shared his extreme agenda for mass deportations and giant camps for immigrants to wait as they await their deportation. Trump even went as far as saying they do no deserve due process. Therefore, I wonder if immigration even plays a part in the reason that majority of Cubans are republicans.
ReplyDeleteThis shift is reminiscent of the Bush v. Gore Presidential batter, especially when looking at the the state of Florida and how voters are going between the two parties. It seems to me that when Cubans are living in the US because of their dislike of the government in Cuba and they want the 'American Dream'. Ronald Reagan had a famous quote that Sen. Ted Cruz likes to use a lot, "“Not too long ago, two friends of mine were talking to a Cuban refugee, a businessman who had escaped from Castro, and in the midst of his story one of my friends turned to the other and said, ‘We don’t know how lucky we are.’ And the Cuban stopped and said, ‘How lucky you are? I had someplace to escape to.’ And in that sentence he told us the entire story. If we lose freedom here,” Reagan said, “there’s no place to escape to." - https://insidesources.com/the-words-echo-reagan-but-cruz-attributes-quote-to-his-dad/
ReplyDeleteSo even before Bush v. Gore and during the Reagan times it was easy to see that Cubans were shifting towards the Republican party, the shift is slower than some would like it could be making more steam and headway as the election process continues.
I will admit that Trump has successfully been able to reach many Hispanic and Latino voters, particularly Cuban as you have pointed out. I think Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden both failed a bit in reaching a "new" segment of the population. When I say new, I mean people freshly voting for them instead of Republicans. To me, it seems that Trump was able to spin his immigration policy in the favor of many Hispanic and Latino citizens who are angry about undocumented Hispanics and Latinos. He has continued this with calling Democrats socialists, which is something many Cuban Americans fear.
