Can Latinos Beat The Heat?

  Texas has continuously seen breaking record heat waves throughout the summer of 2023. “ Over the last 10 years, there were more than 1,600 days when a heat record was matched or broken at one of 22 weather stations across Texas. That’s more than 1,000 more record-breaking days than the 561-day average at those stations in the decades prior to 2013, the Tribune’s analysis found”.(Schumacher, Ford, Douglas, 2023) Many Latinos in Texas are employed in outdoor or manual labor jobs including occupations such as construction agriculture and landscaping. These types of jobs expose workers to harsher temperatures increasing the risk of health-relating illnesses or even death. Recently “ Gov. Boycotting Florida

Governor Ron DeSantis’s decision in Florida to pass Bill 1718 took effect July 1st 2023. This was in response to what he called “reckless” border policies. This bill has brought up a mixture of responses from Latino communities throughout the United States. The bill led many Latinos to lose their jobs in the state, the boycotting of multiple businesses including truck drive in and out of the state, and the mass migration of many Latinos out of Florida. Multiple Latino Individuals have taken to social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok in the form of reaction to the bill. We Are Part of America

  Latino representation in the media is many times limited. This blog will highlight the depiction of Latinos in the media in relation to ongoing events affecting the community in regard to political decisions. Latinos population in America continues to grow and their economic and cultural contribution to the American system must be acknowledged. According to the Pew Research Center, the Hispanic population reached 62.1 million in 2020 an increase of 23% over the previous decades.   As of today, Latinos in America continue to face racial, ethnic, anti-immigrant, biases, and discrimination in employment, education, and in the political spectrum across the United States.  Latinos are often underrepresented and ignored in political discussions. There are several barriers that attribute to this such as lack of representation, stereotyping/cultural bias, and language barriers.  Efforts to address these challenges must require a multi-faceted approach to ensure that Latino...
