" https://hijadetumadre.com/blogs/news/no-sabo-wallpapers " Debate has been struck on multiple media platforms such as TikTok. ( https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT86jUoFu/ ) The hashtag #nosabo #nosabokids has gathered roughly over 600-400 million views altogether. It has even gone on to influence a game called Yo Sabo. ( https://www.yosabothegame.com/shop/p/yosabo ) So what is the debate and what does no sabo mean? No sabo is an incorrect way of saying I don't know in Spanish the correct translation is no se . This incorrect wording has become a recognizable trend among many especially young Latinos who are not fluent in Spanish. The debate has been drawn up among many young Latino Americans, between those who speak fluent Spanish versus those who do not. Those who do not speak proper Spanish have been labeled “No Sabo Kids”. Which has led many non-fluent Latinos to label this nickname as discriminatory and bullying. Non-fluent Spanish speakers have argued that they have be...

Wait, 5 de Mayo isn't Independence Day?

Image
Mexico and various other Central Americans celebrate Independence Day on September 16, which is often confused with the U.S.-centric celebration of 5 de Mayo. Many have labeled 5 de Mayo as a fake celebration filled with stereotypes created by the United States people to have a “fun night” out. In reality, not many people in Mexico celebrate the so-called holiday because it was a battle won in the state of Puebla. This holiday is mainly celebrated by Puebla residents and not the entirety of Mexico. So what is actual Independence Day? It commemorates Catholic Priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla for urging the people to rebel and fight against Spanish authorities. Mexico gained independence from the Spanish empire allowing for the declaration of independence of Mexico. When independence was declared it is believed that Miguel Hidalgo made a cry of independence known as (el Grito de La Independencia) which had been a tradition kept on for years, where now the President of Mexico does E...

Room for a Couple More?

Image
Over 100,00 Asylum seekers have fled to New York this year and as of the beginning of September, many Latinos are being transported there from the border. This is in response to Republican-led states protesting border policies leading to them transporting migrants to Democratic-run areas. New York City holds the right to shelter rule, but currently with the major influx of migrants NYC Mayor Eric Adams has announced that there is “no more room” and has distributed flyers in both English and Spanish at the border urging migrants to “please consider another city as you make your decision about where to settle in the US.” This has taken many members of social media platform X (formally known as Twitter) to call out Mayor Eric Adams labeling him a xenophobic bigot on his recent remarks stating that “this issue (referring to migrants) will destroy NYC” Many users have also compared many of Mayor Adams talking points to Trump. https://twitter.com/ScottHech/status/1699889285443604597 Wi...

Rosaries, a Latino Gang Symbol or Discrimination?

Image
Latino Students in Idaho have reported discriminatory practices within the school district. These specific practices target Latino students by punishing against the usage of outfits consisting of cultural and ethnic symbols that have been labeled as “gang-related symbols' '. This is specifically being seen in Caldwell and Nampa school districts.  Among the so called “Gang Related Symbols” are Catholic rosaries, Brown lives matter shirts etc-, Black aztec eagle known as La Huelga Bird (united farmer workers symbols used by civil rights leaders such as Cesar Chavez) and various other punishable apparel such as wearing clothing colors that are blue or red and even popular sports team apparel such as the LA Dodgers or Boston Red Sox. Many Latino students have come out to say they have faced discrimination and have been continuously accused solely based on their racial identity. Many have come to say that they are punished for wearing specific things other students commonly wear wit...
