Latinos for Republicans is a thing?
Many have noted that a lot of latino ideologies and beliefs are a lot closer to republicans on most issues. This can be attributed to older latinos more conservative ideals. Most (not all) latinos are catholic and heavily align with republican views on abortions. A video by the Washington Post takes into account the growing shift seen in Latino members of texas to vote for the republican party as many feel the the democratic party has continuously failed them. This growth was especially seen in the 2020 election were a mass movement of “Latinos for Trump” was seen

Latinos desire for incorporation contributes to the process of americanization (assimilations). This can lead to not only the adoption of American norms and traditions but participatory behaviors in mainstream political culture. As latinos become more familiar with the United States they gain knowledge of the importance of civic participation and voting. Typically later generation latinos such as 2nd/3rd portray higher levels of assimilation and foster a sense of familiarity and comfort with American norms while disregarding their own cultural ones. The need latinos have to advance not only socially but economically as well in the united states pushes many latino to favor and side with americans values in order to better incorporate themselves. As latinos significantly increase their vote for the republican party it leads them to alienate themselves from other latinos who have not fully assimilated and immigrants.
This begs to question if we will see a greater shift in the 2024 election
Growing up in a town in the south that has a high latino population, I can definitely say that I know a lot of latino republicans. I think a lot of it has to deal with religion. Where I grew up, there is a strong sense of religion especially Christianity or Catholicism. These religious views can align with the laws that republicans vote. Most of the latinos that I know are very religious and align with the republican view of the laws.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in South Florida around a lot of Latinos, especially from Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Colombia. The majority of whom I know are republican, partly due to religion as you mentioned, but some have also voiced not wanting to be associated with the stereotype that if they are democrat they are dependent on assistance programs. This seems to be a perception vs. reality issue however, those that have voiced this are very proud people. Ultimately I think there are several factors that contribute to this line of thinking, religion, culture, stereotypes, etc. Great post!
ReplyDeleteHey Dhamar great post! I feel as if your words about the ideologies being tied closer together rein true! From my limited knowledge of latino culture, I have noticed that religion and family values play in huge in the culture. Me being from an asian family, it would almost be jarring to see how well latino families got along and that always made me happy. However it makes me very sad that these good values can affect the politics of entire groups of people who are working against their best interests. Great post!
