Boycotting Florida
Governor Ron DeSantis’s decision in Florida to pass Bill 1718 took effect July 1st 2023. This was in response to what he called “reckless” border policies. This bill has brought up a mixture of responses from Latino communities throughout the United States.
The bill led many Latinos to lose their jobs in the state, the boycotting of multiple businesses including truck drive in and out of the state, and the mass migration of many Latinos out of Florida. Multiple Latino Individuals have taken to social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok in the form of reaction to the bill. A TikTok account by the name Hispanics TikTok has continuously documented work sites and their lack of workforce as well as the effects the bill has had on multiple job sites across Florida.

Typically working the most physically demanding jobs others are simply not willing to do. In Florida, Latinos make up the workforce of many construction sites as well as agricultural jobs. According to UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Institute, “Latinos are the second-largest racial and ethnic group in Florida at 26% of the population”
Immigrant activists such as Thomas Kennedy have taken to Twitter to show State Representative in Florida during an Informative meeting regarding the bill where State Rep Aliana Garcia claimed the bill was only meant to “scare people from coming to Florida ''. And Rep Rick Roth telling the audience to convince Latino workers not to leave Florida.
